The general rule is to leave 12–18 inches of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls. For living rooms, the front legs of your furniture should rest on the rug to anchor the seating area. In dining rooms, the rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. For bedrooms, a rug placed under the bed should extend 18–24 inches on each side.

Choose a rug that fits under the front legs of your sofa and chairs. For a standard living room (12×18 ft), an 8×10 or 9×12 rug works best. Leave 12–18 inches of floor visible around the edges.
The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides. A 6×9 rug fits a 4-seat table, while an 8×10 fits a 6–8 seat table. Ensure chairs stay on the rug when pushed back.
